Charlotte is the creative mind behind The Scarlet Hen, she started her career in art and design with a degree in Fashion and Textiles at Liverpool University back in the 90’s where she met and married Darren Hughes who was the founder of the super club Cream. Charlotte was thrown into designing and building the merchandise brand for the club and Creamfields Festival. Launching a Cream clothing range for Littlewoods Catalog and opening The Cream Shop in Liverpool & Ibiza. After appearing on BBC Changing Rooms she changed direction and retrained as an Interior designer and after a successful design career in London, Charlotte and Darren started a family. They moved to Charlotte’s home town in Yorkshire after having their two boys Hugo & Jasper. The Family spent their Summers in Ibiza running We Love Sundays at Space. Once the kids started school Charlotte went back to Uni to do a second degree in teaching and was teaching Art and Design at Colleges in Yorkshire. Life was good….Then the shit hit the fan..
A series of life changing sequences she suddenly found herself facing selling the family home and taking the kids out of their amazing school. They say everything happen for a reason and after realising that there wasn’t a residential buyer out there who wanted to take on their huge home with over 22 rooms. Things took a sinister turn when a bogus buyer who made an offer on Norfolk House and then produced fake bank statements, only later to be told he was wanted by the police! The Family found themselves in a daunting situation with very few options available to then, as a last ditch attempt to pay the bills they decided to try this new website Airbnb where you could rent out your home to strangers and although slow to start with and only renting out a bedroom at a time they realised they had a beautiful home that other people wanted to share. The real light bulb moment happened when they took the very brave decision to rent out the whole house to a lovely family at Christmas. The house was booked within minutes of going live on the site and the family excitedly prepared for the guests arrival, they asked about caterers and a pop up cocktail bar so Charlotte sourced these for the family. It was a joy hosting this family, they learned they had a family member in the group with a terminal illness and wanted this last Christmas together to be one they would always remember. How wonderful that they could give this family their home so they could make such precious memories. This made the Christmas in Charlotte’s Mum’s caravan a little brighter that Christmas Eve and they were grateful for the small things in life. Fast forward 3 years and Norfolk House is now rented out to lovely groups of families and friends celebrating their last days of single life!! We quickly realised that hen party groups were just delightful, respectful well behaved groups of lovely friends and families including Mums, Sisters, Aunts, Nieces, Daughters, Cousins and often included Granny too! Our hens are a sophisticated bunch who love nothing more then a visit to Holmfirth Vineyard, Afternoon Tea at The Manor House, dinner at Erics and an afternoon of Perfume Making.
We extend a very warm welcome to family and friends celebrating in our family home. This is not a “Party House” and we do not host this type of booking.
People are often surprised we live at Norfolk House during the week then move to our flat at the weekends, but we just get on with it remembering the goals we set out in the beginning…to keep the children in their amazing local school, the school has been great for both our kids, our eldest son is deaf and this small nuturing school has seen him truly fulfill his potential.
